This short etude for snare drum features very mellow and smooth passages, with phrasing that feels introspective and atmospheric. Much of the piece develops through quiet dynamics, which creates a soft, intimate character. At the same time, it challenges the performer with rhythmic changes and uncommon tuplets, including layered 5:6 and 7:6 groupings as well as passages that shift between dotted sixteenth-note pulses and irregular tuplet feels. The constant interplay between buzz rolls, grace-note textures, and hand-to-hand figures reflects a personal interpretation of Be My Mistake, blurring the line between groove and free-flowing rubato.

The 1975 once asked fans to submit videos showing their creative outlets, and this etude was written as a response to that call. By weaving the rhythmic language of marching snare into the harmonic world of the original track, it becomes more than just an arrangement—it’s an emotional reflection on the song’s vulnerable qualities. The notation calls for playing across different zones of the head (center to edge), giving the performer a tonal palette to mirror the fragility and dynamic shape of the music.
